Founded by Zhabdrung in 1638 and the fort is an imposing structure sitting atop a ridge. It has seen many extensions and changes over the centuries. The present Dzong was rebuilt after a fire destroyed significant portions and it was finally consecrated in 2022.
Dating back to the 17th century, Gangtey Gonpa is a monastery of Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism and the main seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition. The rare black necked cranes are believed to circle the monastery on arrival during the winter and repeat this circling when migrating back to Tibet.
A gentle 1.5 to 2 hour trail that begins near Gangtey Monastery and winds through forests of blue pine, dwarf bamboo, farmhouses and open marshland providing stunning views of the valley. During the winter hikers can enjoy the sight of black-necked cranes that migrate from Tibet.
Serves as an educational hub dedicated to the conservation of the endangered black-necked cranes. Visitors can learn about the cranes’ migratory patterns, behaviour and ecological importance. The centre features an observation deck equipped with several sets of decent binoculars for a close-up view of the cranes during their winter stay in the valley.
